GLSS is living In the Moment

July 22, 2024 by Emily Rosenberg

LYNN — The Family Caregiver Support Program will host its next In the Moment memory cafe at Phoenix Food Hub, the Greater Lynn Senior Services’ teaching kitchen last week.

The memory cafe is a quarterly program hosted by GLSS to engage people with Alzheimer’s disease and dementia in social activities, creative projects, and interactive learning, while providing an opportunity to network with caregiver specialists.

The Family Caregiver Support Program is a state-funded service that provides free support to all caregivers, but specializes in helping people and families who are caring for someone with Alzheimer’s disease or related forms of dementia.

“Caregiving, especially for someone living with a memory impairment, can be very isolating,” GLSS Caregiver Specialist Michele Parr said. “The Memory Cafe provides an opportunity for socialization, networking with others experiencing similar challenges, and a chance for the caregiver and the person they care for to do something together that’s fun and engaging — and different from their usual day-to-day routine.”

During the recent memory cafe, people had the opportunity to engage in a fruit-salad-making session led by Michel Chamsarian, while Parr led a floral-arrangement-making session for attendees to enjoy.
