Peabody to enforce state hemp laws

PEABODY — The Board of Health plans to adopt regulations to enforce state laws regarding the sale of hemp-derived products.

Director of Public Health Sharon Cameron referenced recent regulations adopted by the City of Beverly, which address the enforcement of illegal sales of hemp-derived products, at the board’s meeting Thursday.

The board specifically discussed the sale of hemp-derived cannabidiol (CBD) and delta-8 tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) products.

Concentrated amounts of delta-8 THC are manufactured from hemp-derived CBD, according to the Food and Drug Administration.

Massachusetts prohibits the sale of food and beauty products, among other products, that contain hemp-derived CBD or THC, according to the Commonwealth’s website.

Cameron said adopting local regulations regarding the sale of hemp-derived products will allow the city to better enforce the Commonwealth’s laws.

“We could set out a very clear enforcement structure that would mimic what we have in place for tobacco,” Cameron said. “The state advisories make it clear that it’s not allowed to be sold, but it really doesn’t give much guidance about what happens.”
