SWAMPSCOTT — Resident Tom Driscoll has received the endorsements of six local officials and one former official in support of his reelection campaign as Essex County clerk of courts.
In the upcoming Democratic primary election, Driscoll is set to face Salem resident James Doherty. November’s final election includes independent candidate Doris Rodriguez, of Methuen, and independent candidate Todd Angilly, of Lynnfield.
Essex County District Attorney Paul Tucker and Sheriff Kevin Coppinger were the first to lend their support to Driscoll.
“My office depends on his leadership daily and he always delivers,” Tucker said in a statement. “He has always been a crucial partner in keeping our communities safe and fostering a legal system residents can trust.”
Driscoll described his work and the work of both Tucker and Coppinger as “intertwined.”
“Those two individuals see the work I do every day,” Driscoll said.
Governor’s Councilor Terrence Kennedy said he was proud to endorse Driscoll, and believes his experience proves he is a leader. Driscoll named his and Kennedy’s shared experience as attorneys as a driving force behind their relationship.
“I think being an attorney is one of the most important aspects of this job,” Driscoll said about the clerk of courts position.
Registrar of Probate Pam O’Brien, Northern Essex Registrar of Deeds Paul Ianillocciolo, Southern Essex Registrar of Deeds Dorothy Hersey, and former Southern Essex Registrar of Deeds John O’Brien collectively endorsed Driscoll.
“I served Essex Country for 40 years, and I know firsthand the commitment and experience that Tom Driscoll brings to the clerk’s office every day,” O’Brien said in a statement.
If reelected, Driscoll would earn his fifth six-year term since he was first elected in 2000.
Originally from Lynn, Driscoll received degrees from both the New England School of Law and Bates College. Before becoming the clerk of courts, Driscoll worked as an assistant district attorney, civil litigator, and criminal defense lawyer. He also owned his own law firm, Driscoll and Associates. In Swampscott, Driscoll remains involved as chair of the Retirement Board and a Town Meeting member of more than 30 years.
