SAUGUS — At the Saugus Public Library, Stephanie “Miss Steph” Bluestein held her “Science with Miss Steph” program Wednesday.
In a room tucked off in the library, children and their family members gathered to make oobleck in a science experiment.
Oobleck is a non-Newtonian fluid, meaning that it acts as both a solid and a liquid.
The setup was simple: aluminum-foil pie tins were filled with water, then cornstarch — a kitchen staple — was added.
The kids had an opportunity to make the oobleck in various colors, with Bluestein offering a multitude of different color dyes to allow for participants to customize theirs.
By offering dye assortments, Bluestein additionally was able to teach the children about color combinations.
Children’s hands went into the air with enthusiasm, as they requested different color dyes be added to their pie tins.
“We just started ‘Science with Miss Steph’ (the past) two months and the kids are really enjoying it,” Bluestein said. “I usually get 18 to 20 kids in there.”
Bluestein said that the same familiar faces often return for the program.
At a previous session, children made volcanoes with baking soda and vinegar.
Bluestein is hopeful that the program will continue in the fall, and encouraged library-goers to participate in other children’s’ programming, which is coordinated by Amy Melton, the head of the library’s Children’s Department.
“Science with Miss Steph” is held on Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons at the library at 3:30 p.m. and will be held throughout the remainder of the summer.
