LYNN — The 10th Annual Lynn Youth Track Meet Series, hosted by Lynn Parks, completed its final meet of the season at Manning Field. It welcomed an additional 29 new entrants, making it 266 registered runners this season.
It’s well-known that the series welcomes those from other cities in Massachusetts – and even from other states. That said, this one welcomed two youngsters from Bermuda in 3-year-old Jiya Trott and 6-year-old Jiva Trott.
Most runners participated in another fun relay this time around. The non-competitive relays allow youngsters to enjoy the passing of the “cherished relay baton,” as it’s known as.
The girls’ 30-meter race was won by Lynn’s Journee Robinson (age 3, 8.5s), who was closely followed by Jiya Trott (10.6s). Lynn’s Jose Munoz Veliz (age 3) dominated his field with a time of 8.3 seconds.
The girls’ 50-meter race had just one runner over the age of 11. The top three resided from Lynn in Desirae Muriel (age 11, 8.4s), Amyia Wallea (age 11, 8.6s), and Janiyan Robinson (age 12, 8.9s). Youngster Fatimah Gibson (age 8, 9.0s), of Hyde Park, placed fourth. She comes with a connection, too, as her father ran track at Lynn Classical and was a state champion hurdler.
All but six of the 33 runners in the boys’ 50-meter race were under 15 years of age. Leading that group was a visitor from Arlington, Nate Young, who showed some good speed for his age (14, 6.4s). He was followed by the ever-so-consistent Algenys Velez (age 16, 8.6s), of Lynn, and Pascual Abad Hirald (age 15, 7.1s), also of Lynn.
The top four in the girls’ 100-meter race were Marblehead’s Maeve Korgie (age 12, 14.0s), Fatimah Gibson (14.7s), Lynn’s Leila Jolibois (14.9s), and Lynn’s Abitale Kivagheni (age 17, 15.1s).
The boys’ 100-meter dash was won by a newcomer, Lynn’s Dereon Phipps, a 17-year-old who delivered an impressive performance of 11.9 seconds. He was followed by previous top finishers Nate Young (12.2s), Algenys Velez (12.5s), and Pascual Abad Hirald (12.7s).
The top four in the girls’ 200-meter race were Korgie in a quick 31.8 seconds, Desirae Muriel in 33.9, Kivagheni in 34.6, and Salem’s Abigail Murphy (35.0s). On the boys’ side, top finishers were Phipps 25.0s, Lynn’s Francis Ucheigwe (age 16, 26.5s), and Lynn’s Defi Baeshan (age 13, 26.7s).
With her win in the 400-meter race, Korgie (1:12.5s) became a triple winner. Maria Villalba (age 13, 1:16.3s), of Lynn, captured second. Phipps also became a triple winner, placing first in the boys’ 400-meter race in 1:07.7 seconds, followed by Lynn’s Kevin Smart (age 18, 1:14.1s).
Murphy won the girls’ 800-meter race in 3:19.8 seconds, while Franklin Maldonado continued his dominance with a 2:16.9.
The girls’ mile was won by Wilmarilyn Fernandez with a time of 7:37 seconds, while Lynn’s Ian De La Rosa (5:35.9s) was a clear winner in the boys’ mile, followed by Peabody’s Aiden Trainor (5:46.9s).
