To the editor:
I want to challenge some assertions made by Walter Haug in his Aug. 8 letter to the editor, “Project 2025 and climate change.”
JD Vance did not write the foreword, Kevin D. Roberts, PhD, wrote it. One can find this easily by downloading the document.
“The more CO2 in the atmosphere, the more heat from the sun is trapped on the earth.”
It is a well-known fact that the ability of CO2 to trap energy within the earth is not a linear relationship.
There is a point of saturation, beyond which more CO2 has no effect in trapping more energy.
Not all “floods, extreme heat domes, tornadoes, mammoth forest fires, landslides” are becoming more severe and frequent.
The UN IPCC (IPCC 6th Assessment Report, Chapter 12, page 1856) has stated there is not enough evidence or clear signs yet that there is a trend happening in:
● River flood
● Landslides
● Hydrological drought
● Agricultural and ecological drought
● Fire weather
● Tropical cyclones
● Coastal floods
● Coastal erosion
According to the World Wildlife Fund, the area of the globe burned has declined steadily since 1900, when it first started being recorded.
Project 2025 recommends that NOAA be dismantled and many of its functions eliminated, sent to other agencies, privatized, or placed under the control of states and territories. As a reminder, the country runs continual trillion-dollar deficits and the government’s debt is $35 trillion. When the day of reckoning for this mess comes, many agencies will be scrutinized. No one will care about climate change then.
Finally, in caring for the planet, wars are not kind to the earth. Who is funding the War in Ukraine that is putting us at risk of nuclear war? Who is funding the War in Gaza?
Vote for peace — reject the warmongers.
Sincerely,
Richard Smith
