Mystery solved: It was a dog

MARBLEHEAD — A young female jogger was attacked Monday afternoon by an animal that was believed to be a coyote according to the Police Department.

As of 5 p.m. Wednesday night, the department released a statement that the bite was from a dog, not a coyote.

“The Marblehead Animal Control Officer has determined that the biting animal was NOT a coyote. It was a dog that was off-leash in the area.
We are updating this messaging to inform neighbors and visitors that use the path, that the biting animal in this incident has been contained and not a threat to those using this space,” the statement said.
The statement read, “Coyotes may or may not be in this area and other parts of Marblehead. Our co-existence with them depends on following the best practices.”

The department said in a statement that on Monday night, it received a report of a dog biting an individual jogging along Brown Street on the Neck.

“After an investigation by Animal Control and the animal inspector, it has been determined that the biting animal was possibly a coyote and the resulting injuries were not life-threatening,” the report stated.

The individual was taken to Salem Hospital, where she was given an inoculation for rabies.
