Nahant devising strategic plan for schools

Benjamin Pierce

August 27, 2024 by Benjamin Pierce

NAHANT — The School Committee voted unanimously to appoint Committee members Liana DeLoid and Mariana Hire to the district’s new Strategic Plan Committee during its meeting Tuesday night.

Superintendent of Schools Robert Liebow proposed the idea of creating a “rolling” three-year plan that highlights the goals and needs of the Johnson Elementary School community.

“Every year, things fall off that are either completed or are no longer pertinent, and then new items can get added,” Liebow explained. “The plan takes on sort of a life of its own and progresses.”

Prior to the decision to form the committee, the district had not had anything similar since August 2022.

DeLoid expressed immediate interest in being a part of the Strategic Plan Committee, saying that having one in place could have been beneficial to some of the recent significant decisions the School Committee had to make.

“We really do need a strategic plan and a community-based approach to what the future looks like for the kids,” DeLoid said.

Liebow and the School Committee discussed other people that would be ideal fits for Strategic Plan Committee members, including Liebow, Johnson Principal Kevin Andrews, multiple teachers, and a town official such as Town Administrator Tony Barletta.

School Committee Chair Patricia Karras inquired about the difference between strategic and financial planning. Liebow responded by saying that finances should not restrict certain things from being implemented into a strategic plan.

“It’s the hopes and dreams for the future,” Liebow said. “Some of them you can accomplish, and some you can’t do.”

The School Committee also voted to appoint Karras and Committee member Beth Anderson as the committee’s contract negotiators who will meet with the district’s teachers.
