Some programs – no matter the sport or season – begin with some rust, but don’t tell that to the Lynn Classical and Swampscott volleyball teams. Each picked up season-opening wins Wednesday evening.
The host Lady Rams delivered a convincing 3-0 win against Revere in set scores of 25-16, 25-15, and 25-12. Emma Chevalier registered 30 assists, five kills, and nine aces, while Jaiyda DeBenedetto (6 kills, 4 aces, 7 digs) and Amanda Hughes (10 kills, 2 aces, 6 digs) did a little bit of everything. In the third set, Hughes and Chevalier led the way with seven combined kills and no hitting errors.
Swampscott hit the road to Beverly, returning home with a four-set victory (24-26, 25-20, 25-20, 25-21). A standout for the Big Blue was Reese Schaiberger (22 assists, 15 service points, 5 service aces), while Lilia Paster delivered 19 service points and three aces.

Marblehead 0
In set scores of 15-25, 27-29, and 23-25, it wasn’t Marblehead’s night on enemy hardwood. Masconomet swept the Magicians to kick off the fall. On the bright side, however, Marblehead’s Sydney Faris and Sammy Walker had five kills apiece, and Lila Moniz recorded six. Eva Burke dished out 17 assists, while Meg Parkman picked up 13 digs.

Call it a successful debut for Peabody High coach Sherrill Erickson, whose Tanners (1-0) took down Danvers in set scores of 20-25, 25-13, 30-28, and 25-23.
“It was a great team win led by Lizzy Bettencourt and Sydney Lynch,” she said.

Peabody’s boys soccer team (1-0) began with a bang, edging Danvers by a goal late. With just 15 minutes remaining, Osama Mishal did the honors from Luke Murray.
Danvers opened the scoring on a PK from Keegan Winterton, but Malachi Roberts equalized for the Tanners off a feed from Joaquim Nunes. Derek Collins, Jason Decost, and Owen Brennan played well for Peabody, according to coach Stan McKeen.

St. Mary’s jumped on English from the get-go and went home with a 4-1 win at Manning Field. Anthony Gomez (2 goals), Ryan Esquival, and Aiden Martins tucked goals for the Spartans (1-0).

Despite a highlight-reel goal from Marblehead’s Miles Fontela-Tuttle to open the scoring, the Magicians were edged by host Masconomet.
“We took the momentum, but missed two shots.Then, Masco took it away and scored a bouncing ball inside the box. The last 10 minutes belong to us,” said Marblehead coach Elmer Magaña. “Our defense kept us in the game, especially Luke Miller. Our mids and forwards fought for every ball. Goalie Rory Zampese had two great saves.”

Peabody 0
Despite holding Danvers scoreless in the first half, the Falcons struck twice in the second to knock off Peabody in the season-opener.
According to Peabody coach Andrew Douglass, Alessandra Forgione played well between the pipes, while Ally Bettencourt and Madi Barrett were solid on defense and both Connie Patturelli and Brooke Lomasney were effective in the midfield.

St. John’s Prep 216
The St. John’s Prep golf team had its moments at Brookmeadow Country Club, but fell in the season-opener to traditional rival Xaverian. Prep captain Tripp Hollister led the scoring with a 1-under par round of 35, highlighted by an eagle on the eighth hole.
CROSS COUNTRY
While many head to Salem’s Winter Island to sightsee, Marblehead’s boys cross country team went to win. The Magicians defeated Salem, 15-45, and were led by senior captains Nate Assa and Will Cerrutti, who both crossed the line in 17:45. They were followed by juniors Henrik Adams (3rd, 18:17) and Will Cruikshank (4th, 18:19) along with senior Jonah Potach (5th, 18:21). Marblehead (1-0) will travel to Maudslay Park in Newburyport on Saturday to compete in the Clipper Relays.
Swampscott’s girls cross country team beat Danvers, 26-30, but lost to Beverly. Scoring runners for the Big Blue were Annabelle Averett (1st), Collette Heil, Theia Giantis, Anna Metaxatos, and Lila Vander Linden. On the boys’ side, they lost to Danvers and Beverly, but received scoring performances from Simon Brown, Anthony Colella, Miles Brown, Hunter Hersey, and Atticus Jakious.
