The Massachusetts 9/11 Fund and municipalities across the region are recognizing and memorializing the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001 on Wednesday.
Lynnfield is having a First Responders Day and 9/11 Commemoration on the Town Common at 6 p.m. Lynnfield’s Todd Angilly will sing and Select Board Chair Dick Dalton, Fire Chief Glenn Davis, and Police Chief Nick Secatore will all make remarks. The ceremony will be followed by a cookout serving hamburgers and hot dogs, free of charge.
Marblehead will hold a gathering at 10 a.m. at Memorial Park.
Peabody is holding a memorial at 9:30 a.m. with all of the city’s public-safety officials at the Fire and Police Memorial on Perkins Street.
Saugus is holding a gathering outside of the Fire Station at 298 Central St. at 8:46 a.m.
The Swampscott Fire Department will hold a ceremony at 9:55 a.m. at its headquarters, which is located at 76 Burrill St.
Statewide, the Massachusetts 9/11 Fund has partnered with high-school educators to provide learning guides and digital resources on the impact the terrorist attacks had on the nation.
The Massachusetts 9/11 Fund hosts the state’s annual commemoration, beginning at 8:30 a.m. on the State House steps, and a wreath-laying ceremony at 1:30 p.m. in the Boston Public Garden’s Contemplative Garden. “Our goal is to help teachers to educate today’s students — none of whom were alive when the attacks occurred — about the sacrifices made by victims from Massachusetts on 9/11,” Pat Bavis, a member of the 9/11 Fund’s Families Advisory Committee, said in a press release.
Pat Hoban, a member of the Massachusetts 9/11 Fund’s Family Advisory Committee, said the fund aims to educate students about the 206 families from Massachusetts who lost a loved one on Sept. 11, 2001.
“I want the kids to know about the event and how 2,976 people died that day, and that 206 of those people came from Massachusetts or had ties to Massachusetts,” she said.
In addition to the lesson plans, complementary video resources are available to download for free from the Massachusetts 9/11 Fund, the release stated.
“These resources enable public, private, and charter school social-studies teachers to seamlessly integrate video modules into their existing curriculum at no cost,” the release reads.
