Hot Topics – Saugus Athletic Director Matt Serino

Mark Aboyoun

September 11, 2024 by Mark Aboyoun

It’s no secret that sports fans have opinions. And, more often than not, you’ve got to learn how to defend them. Let’s take a look at some hot sports topics at the moment:

With three consecutive Eastern Conference Player of the Week awards, should Caitlin Clark be in the MVP conversation?

“I don’t see how she couldn’t be in the MVP conversation. You’ve had a lot of great WNBA players who helped transform the game and it’s definitely growing excitement. I have three little girls who love watching basketball. There have been some great pioneers like Diana Taurasi. You can’t even turn the TV on right now and not see Caitlin Clark. It’s not just what she did in college, but it transferred to the professional league. I don’t see how she’s not in the conversation.”

What did you think of Tom Brady’s broadcasting debut on Sunday?

“Unfortunately, my Sundays are filled with Bluey and the Disney Channel. So, I get to sneak in some of the Patriots game, but I heard he did a pretty good job.”

With the Seahawks and Jets next, is a 3-0 start for the Patriots on the table?

“Anything can happen when you have a new coach who builds excitement. Anything is a possibility. Skill doesn’t always play a factor. Obviously, when you get to the professional level, it plays a factor, but if you get a locker room that believes in a coach and wants to play for that coach, the sky’s the limit. Right now, it seems like he has those guys buzzing on all cylinders. I don’t see why they can’t keep riding it out.”

Are coach Deion Sanders and Colorado (1-1) legitimate, or mostly talk?

“I do think they’re legitimate. I do think that they have some very good talent on that team. I think they are just held from a media perspective or from a national standpoint to a higher standard. Having Deion Sanders, who’s a flashy guy who likes to showcase his stuff, gains more attention. I think they unfairly get held to a higher standard than some other programs who maybe aren’t as out there. Deion played in the NFL and is a Hall-of-Fame player. I think the guy knows what he’s doing. He’s got some real talent on that roster. They’re going to be a tough team for anybody – night in night out.”

What are your thoughts on NIL and its impact on college sports?

“I’ve always been an advocate for saying that college athletes should have some type of financial investment. They are bringing in the universities a lot of money. Some of them, they’re the major revenue for some of these universities. Especially if you’re a Division 1 athlete, the ability to get a job to financially provide for yourself is nearly impossible. I’ve always been an advocate that they should be compensated in some way, shape, or form. I think what we have now has just gone out of control. I’m not opposed to athletes using their name as a brand and making money off that because, again, that’s their talent that’s allowed them that ability.”
