If you’re a fan of cross country, Wednesday was action-packed.
Starting with Lynn Classical, its girls team raced to a 15-40 win against Everett for regular season win No. 1. Marianna De Leon led the pack from start to finish and placed first. On the boys’ side, it was a 24-31 loss, but Gianni El Mudesi paced the Rams, finishing second – only four seconds behind the winner.
The Marblehead boys defeated Beverly, 25-31, at the J.C. Phillips Nature Preserve. Nate Assa (16:14) and Will Cerrutti (16:15) finished first and second on the 2.95-mile course. Henrik Adams (16:55) and Will Cruikshank (16:55) finished sixth and seventh, followed by Jacob Szalewicz (17:15) in ninth to seal the victory. Jonah Potach also ran a strong race, finishing 10th in 17:28. The Magicians upped their record to 2-0 on the young season.
On the girls’ side, Marblehead lost, 24-31, but Marri O’Connell snagged first place in 18:47. Jesslyn Roemer and Abbie Goodwin finished sixth and seventh, respectively, to lead the Magicians.
Lynnfield’s boys team took care of business in Amesbury.
“They braved a tough course with a lot of hills and ended up coming out on top, 25-32. There were a lot of close finishes today that helped put the team over the top,” said Lynnfield coach William Wallace.
The Pioneers (1-0) were led by Shea McCarthy (16:25), who delivered a huge sprint toward the end of his race to beat out Amesbury’s top runner. He was followed by Dylan Nguyen (17:40, 3rd), Nick DeGennaro (18:32, 5th), Liam Gardner (19:24, 7th) and Ashkrit Mahajan (19:50, 9th).
Lynnfield’s girls lost a close one, 25-30, to Amesbury. Gabriella Bottaro led the way with a second-place finish of 21:56.
The Lynn Tech/KIPP program delivered an up-and-down performance. The girls defeated Innovation, while the boys fell. Wilmarlyn Fernandez (1st), Faith Akinbami (3rd), Gissel Rodriguez (4th), and Maria Villalba (5th) catapulted the girls to victory, while Franklin Maldonado (2nd) and Libon Abdikadir (4th) led the boys.

A scoreless first half was no problem for Marblehead boy’s soccer team, which tucked three in the second half to escape Peabody with a win. Goal-scorers were Stefan Shepard, David Magen, and Jared Halpern.
“Second half, we came out like a pack of wolves and won almost every ball,” said Marblehead coach Elmer Magaña. “Defense was solid and our mids ate all game long.”
Peabody coach Stan McKeen said his team was “unable to generate much offense,” but credited Jason Decost, Kacper Kowalczyk, and Osama Mishal for strong showings.

Despite strikes from Eider Solis and Anthony Gomez, the visiting Spartans fell to the Shamrocks in a heartbreaker on a late penalty kick.

Swampscott showed off its offensive chemistry with a 5-0 handling of the Vikings. Lyla Rogers (2 goals, assist), Greta Siefken (goal, 2 assists), Fiona Keaney (goal, assist), and Fiona Flebbe (unassisted goal) led the barrage, while Easter Cunningham closed out the game nicely between the pipes.

Behind strong defense and brilliant goaltending from Eleni Echevarria, the Spartans (2-0-1) played to a scoreless tie with Bishop Feehan, a defending state championship finalist in Division 1.

Mea Papazoglou scored twice to lead the Lady Rams to a convincing win on Manning Field turf. Mia Duncan, Dulce Juarez (2 assists), and Arianna Martinez also found the back of the net, while McKenna Duncan (2 assists) and Fahely Escobar (assist) played the role of facilitators.

Consider these Fishermen reeled in. Saugus cruised to victory behind two goals and two assists from Maddison Botta, who now stands with 98 career points. Shawn and Shayln Sewell each scored twice, while Sydney Deleidi netted the first of her young career.

Each and every Marblehead golfer (Marty Ryan, Tyler Forbes, Jacob Hershfield, James Bickell, Greyson Leventhal, Joy Meshulam, Max King, Will Macrina) went home victorious Wednesday in a team win against Saugus. Marty Ryan was crowned medalist with a 34 to lead Marblehead (4-2).

The Big Blue had some big moments at Tedesco Country Club, but, ultimately, it wasn’t enough. Mike Collins won his match, while Tyler Ostroff drew even to lead Swampscott.
