You know what I’ve been thinking? It must’ve been a long, hard offseason for the Lynn English football team, which shocked the state with a 28-14 win against Lawrence on enemy turf.
Talk about flipping the switch. Under first-year coach Tyllor McDonald, the Bulldogs’ 14-point win was the polar opposite of last season’s Week 1, when English lost to the same Lawrence side by 27 points.
“I’ve been here for nine months and I have a great group of guys who want to be coached,” McDonald said. “I told them it was going to be a dog fight, but my guys showed up and got the W.”
A dog fight, indeed, as the Bulldogs “did a little bit of everything,” according to McDonald. Xavier Beauchamp (2 touchdowns rushing) recorded 7 yards per carry, Limbert Thomas found the endzone, and Shane Knowlton-Simard hauled in a TD pass from Jaiden Rosario.
“Our running game was clicking,” said McDonald, whose team left Lawrence with two interceptions, to boot.
Now, Swampscott. The familiar programs square off Friday at Manning Field with kickoff slated for 7 p.m.
If you ask me, this one comes down to discipline. English might want to remain under control despite a significant win, while Swampscott aims to limit its penalties that haunted the Big Blue in a Week 1 loss to St. Mary’s.
Either way, we’ll be there.
Bulldogs, good week.
