SAUGUS — At its first meeting since the start of the school year, the School Committee was poised to vote on this year’s District Improvement Plan, but ultimately tabled it until its next meeting.
The District Improvement Plan, which spans five years, is part of an initiative to improve the schools in the district.
As it spans multiple years, the plan’s annual objectives are to be voted on prior to implementation by administrators at schools within the district.
Superintendent Michael Hashem briefed the committee on this year’s goals.
“Each year, we’re targeting different focus areas,” Hashem said.
Hashem said that while there are many areas that can be focused on, the district is looking to emphasize those that provide the most impact.
The first area of focus, Hashem said, is growth, with its ultimate goal being “to develop a work culture and environment to ensure Saugus is a district where educators are valued, appreciated, and motivated.”
The second area of focus, Hashem said, is fostering an environment that provides “students in all grades access to opportunities that match their talents and interests.”
The last focus area, Hashem added, is to “provide all students with… consistently outstanding instruction within a supportive learning environment.” He said this goal was kept the same from years prior due to how important it is.
Hashem additionally noted two secondary areas of focus within the plan that were carried over from the year before, which would make it a point to continue supporting teachers through professional development and to strengthen the district’s communication and engagement efforts.
Vice Chair Thomas Whittredge wanted time to “look it over” and have the input of Chair Vincent Serino, who was not in attendance. He motioned to table voting on the plan until the committee’s next meeting, which passed unanimously.
