You know what I’ve been thinking? Saugus’ girls soccer star Madison Botta has taken the saying “She shoots, she scores” to an entirely new level.
What a week it was for the senior, who, by the way, is inching closer to 100 career points (97). She led the Sachems to a 3-1 week with wins against Winthrop, Gloucester, and St. Mary’s. Saugus’ only defeat came at the hands of Masconomet.
Across the three wins, Saugus outscored its opponents, 17-2, but let’s talk about Botta.
Against Winthrop, she netted a hat-trick to go with two assists. Days later against the Gloucester Fishermen, Botta did the reeling in and caught another two goals and two assists.
But the big win came Friday when Saugus bested St. Mary’s, 3-1, on home turf. Botta scored her first goal off her own corner kick to tie the game, 1-1, then slotted Saugus’ third goal to put a lid on the Spartans.
With Botta and company doing their things on the field, and first-year coach April Martinez bringing her passion to the sideline, the sky’s the limit for the Sachems – if you ask me.
Saugus hosts Salem at 4:30 p.m. on Monday. Will Botta reach the 100-point mark, or will the Witches scare a month early?
Madison, good week.
