ROUNDUP: St. Mary’s girls run by the rest

Joey Barrett and Mark Aboyoun

September 17, 2024 by Joey Barrett, Mark Aboyoun

In “an exciting one,” as said by coach Tristan Smith, St. Mary’s girls cross country team won, 27-28, against Bishop Stang and tied Arlington Catholic, 28-28, on Tuesday.

“But thanks to sixth-place runner Jazmin Rodriguez being the tiebreaker, the girls start 2-0,” said Smith, whose side was led by Kelsey Kwiatek (1st) and Nina Lopes (2nd) as top finishers.

The boys lost to Bishop Stang, 15-48, but won against Arlington Catholic, 24-33. Eighth-graders Cristian Rodriguez and Lucian Paula were the top-two finishers for St. Mary’s.

“A really exciting start,” Smith said. “And real proof that every single kid’s contributions on this team matter. I’m so happy with everyone today. Considering we were entering what seems like a rebuilding year with a younger team, I couldn’t be prouder of today.”

CROSS COUNTRY

Bishop Fenwick had little luck in its matchups against the Bishop Feehan Shamrocks, but positives were aplenty. In the girls’ 28-29 loss, Marianna Kay delivered a first-place finish in the 3-mile (19:44). Sophomores Adelaide Sweatman (3rd) and Olivia Rowe (6th) were followed closely by junior Julia Davis (7th), who finished despite a calf injury suffered after the mile mark. Caroline Blatchford was Fenwick’s fifth runner in 12th place.

On the boys’ side, an 18-43 loss, Feehan continued its winning efforts despite strong performances from Fenwick’s Sam Appleyard (4th), Doron Appleyard (6th), Ryan Gauthier (10th), John Reilly (11th), freshman Chris Kay (12th), and Nondas Lagonakis (13th).

“[We] should become much stronger by the end of the season,” said Fenwick coach Fred Doyle.

BOYS SOCCER

Lynnfield 5
Hamilton-Wenham 0

Lynnfield remained perfect (5-0) with another win at Pioneer Stadium – this time, against Hamilton-Wenham.

“They’re having a good year, so a very good result for us,” said coach Brent Munroe. “Joel Anthony (2 goals) had three assists, so five points, which is pretty good. Great team win.”

Rocco Scenna added another goal, as did Matt Reinold and Ollie Morgan for Lynnfield, which faces North Reading on Thursday.

Chelsea 3
Lynn English 1

The Bulldogs hit the road to Chelsea, but returned home empty-handed on Tuesday. After the two-goal defeat, English looks to rebound Thursday at Everett (4:15 p.m.).

“Injuries have been hurting us,” said coach Valdrim Xhemajli.

GIRLS SOCCER

Lynn Classical 1
Somerville 1

The Lady Rams (3-1-1) earned a hard-fought draw in Somerville Tuesday evening. Arianna Martinez was the goal-scorer for Classical, while Dulce Juarez provided the assist. In net, first-year player Maegan Baker registered 12 saves.

Classical aims for better when it hosts Malden at 4 p.m. on Thursday.

FIELD HOCKEY

Swampscott 4
Marblehead 1

The Big Blue bounced back with a win over traditional archrival Marblehead. Swampscott’s Olivia Quagrello and Chloe Puzzo were pulling strings on the offensive end, tallying two assists apiece.

Quagrello popped up on the scoresheet as well with a goal, as did teammates Sofia Robledo-Puch, Lia Beatrice, and Maisie Russo. Defensively, goalie Lila Caplan did her thing with seven saves.

Masconomet 4
Peabody 1

The Tanners couldn’t defend home turf, losing a tough game to the Chieftains. Peabody trailed just 1-0 at halftime, but couldn’t get into an offensive rhythm. Masco’s goals were scored by Mia Juliano, Savannah Stevens, and Genevieve Clapp (2).

For Peabody, Amelia DiBattista fired a shot at the buzzer to end the game. Sophia Kassis made 17 saves between the pipes to round out Peabody positives.

Bishop Feehan 4
St. Mary’s 2

This time around, between familiar opponents, the Shamrocks got the better of the Spartans. The game was tied, 2-2, before Feehan scored the final two goals to steal a win at Manning Field. Audrey Zinck and Camdyn Driscoll were the goal-scorers for St. Mary’s (3-2).

VOLLEYBALL

Bishop Fenwick 3
St. Mary’s 0

The Crusaders spiked St. Mary’s with a sweep (25-11, 25-15, 25-23) in Lynn. Leading the Spartans were Valeria Morillo (4 kills, 3 digs) and Sky Watson (2 kills, 14 digs, ace).

Lynn Tech 3
KIPP 0

In set scores of 25-10, 25-14, and 25-10, the Tech volleyballers (3-0) cruised to a win against city rival KIPP. Lia Morales of the Tigers led the charge with 16 digs, eight aces, and three kills. Other contributors included Ana Godoy (11 digs, 5 aces), Zahara Belizaire (13 assists, 5 digs, 4 aces, 3 kills), Kaylee Deschamps (5 kills, 4 digs, 2 aces), and Angelica Santini (8 digs).

“All 15 players contributed in a great, all-around team win,” said Tech coach Kaitlyn Wechsler.

GOLF

St. Mary’s 164
Lowell Catholic 127

After starting the season 1-3, the Spartans have found their groove. They’ve won three consecutive matches to climb over .500.

Shea Newhall led the way, scoring 32 points. Stephen Nason (31), Luke DiLisio (29), and Chase Collins (28) all played roles in win No. 4.

Malden 37
Lynn Classical 35

The Rams (2-2) fell by the slimmest of margins against Malden. In the No. 1 position, captain Jake Beyea won his match, 6-3. In the third spot, Brayden Curley won, 6.5-2.5. Also playing well for the Rams was Finn Daleferro.

It’s rival week, as they face Lynn English on Thursday.

Marblehead 38.5
Danvers 33.5

The strong start continued for the Magicians, as they moved to 6-2. Marty Ryan, Tyler Forbes, Jacob Hershfield, and Max King all went home with victories. James Bickell, Greyson Leventhal, and Will Macrina drew even.

Marblehead will take on Masconomet at Ferncroft Country Club on Wednesday.
