LYNN — Visual artist Jah’Nyah Spencer will release her debut single, “Latté,” to the public on Oct. 1.
She described “Latté,” which was produced by RFM Beats, as a sweet, whimsical, and playfully silly pop-soul song.
Although Spencer has collaborated with other recording artists in the past, she has never released a solo song before. She aims to combine her visual and musical art to create an immersive experience.
Spencer said “Latté” is a love letter to the little girl she once was, when she wanted nothing more than to be a pop star. She pleaded with her parents to take her to auditions, enroll her in dance classes, and pursue any opportunity that would bring her closer to her dream.
After taking ballet for a few years, she ultimately gave up on that dream once the perception that others had of her interfered with how she viewed herself.
“‘Latté’ keeps that little girl alive, and it reminds her that she can be whatever she wants to be. I want this song to help everyone who’s going through this rough season, and remember that there’s something worth fighting for, and to just keep going,” Spencer said.
Spencer acknowledged she felt scared about releasing the song, although she said it is a positive kind of fear.
She added that she is excited to share “Latté” with the world.
“This is what I want. I want to be an artist in every facet of the word. I don’t want to be limited, told what to do, how to think, how to act, none of it. I just want to make things that make me feel good, and share that sentiment with the world,” Spencer said. “Not enough music makes me feel hopeful and genuinely grateful to wake up every day and try again. And that’s what I want my music to be, the bridge that leads you to the light at the end of the tunnel.”
She said the song was also inspired by a former relationship she had, and said it was one of the first pieces she wrote as a result of it. She said that at that time, her life was shifting and the people around her were transforming in unexpected ways.
“It’s easy for me to blame myself, but this time I didn’t want to. I wanted to stop internalizing everything and just grow up and be grateful,” Spencer said. “Nothing lasts forever and that’s OK. The future is still ahead of me, might as well just keep going.”
“Latté” can be streamed on Spotify, Apple Music, and iTunes on Oct. 1. People can also find the song at https://distrokid.com/hyperfollow/jahnyah/latt-2
