Power rates surging in Swampscott

Benjamin Pierce

September 27, 2024 by Benjamin Pierce

SWAMPSCOTT — The Town Administrator’s office has announced the details of Swampscott Community Power’s new electricity rates.

Swampscott Community Power (SCP) is the town’s group electricity buying program. In July, the Select Board voted unanimously to adopt the rates as part of a new three-year contract with the program, which will take effect in November.

Three plans are available for community members with different rates. The Basic plan will be available at a rate of $13.97 per kilowatt hour, and is described as including the state minimum amount of renewable electricity. The Standard Green plan costs $14.83 per kilowatt hour. According to SCP, this plan provides electricity that is 100% from renewable sources.

“Green participants currently receive an additional 15% off their electricity specifically from renewable sources in the New England region above the state minimum requirement,” the town said in a press release.

When the new contract takes effect, the discount will increase to 20%.

The New England Green plan, offered at $16.79 per kilowatt hour, provides electricity from 100% renewable sources that are local to the region.

No action is required of the current more than 4,000 households that are part of the green-power program.

According to Select Board member Doug Thompson, each participating household avoids the use of approximately 2,200 pounds of CO2 per year.

Residents are able to change plans or exit the program at any time without penalty. Potential new members looking to sign up or current ones looking to change plans are encouraged to do so before their November National Grid meter-read date.
