LYNN — The Lynn Housing Authority & Neighborhood Development (LHAND) hosted its 26th Scholarship Golf Tournament on Sept. 13 at Gannon Golf Course. The tournament was played in memory of Laurie Walsh, former chairperson of the LHAND Board of Commissioners.
The event was coordinated by Kassandra Lopez, John Ladd, Cathy Rowe, and Jason Newhall of LHAND. Among those attending were Mayor Jared C. Nicholson, State Rep. Dan Cahill, State Sen. Brendan Crighton and City Councilors Dianna Chakoutis, Fred Hogan, Jay Walsh, Brian Field, and Brian Lapierre, all supporters of the LHAND Scholarship Fund. The major sponsors were Jim Connors of McGrath Construction, as well as Obtek Services, EDIC and Eastern Bank.
“Scholarships like these are crucial for our students’ higher education journeys, and we’re thankful for the chance to support them as they work toward their academic and personal goals,” said Nicholson. “We wish the recipients all the best and want them to know that the entire City of Lynn stands behind them, especially the team at LHAND.”
In addition to its mission of providing affordable, quality housing, LHAND is committed to helping the youth of Lynn invest in their higher education. Over the years, the staff at LHAND have established strong working relationships with guidance counselors in all Lynn high schools. Thanks to the dedication of these counselors, LHAND has successfully supported many students in their academic pursuits.
LHAND receives donations from staff, individuals, families, businesses, and nonprofits in support of Scholarship Golf Tournament. Connors and McGrath Construction are long-time, committed sponsors.
“This cause is incredibly important to us at LHAND,” said Executive Director Charles Gaeta. “We recognize the challenges that rising education costs create for the youth in our city. That is why LHAND strives to support many young adults with scholarships each year.”
LHAND is eagerly anticipating the opportunity to award another group of scholarship recipients in the spring, recognizing their hard work and dedication while providing essential support for their higher education journeys. This upcoming round of scholarships aims to empower local students as they pursue their academic and professional goals, fostering a brighter future for the community.
