SAUGUS–In the upcoming week, Lincoln Avenue’s sidewalk will be replaced, and the work will most likely last until the start of November.
According to Town Manager Scott Crabtree, the project will cost about $370,000 and will be done by J. Marchese & Sons Inc., while the engineering will be overseen by Tighe & Bond. It will include new sidewalk panels and the installation of granite curbing on the eastern side of Lincoln Avenue, spanning from Seagirt Avenue to Guild Road.
There will be limited parking near the work and traffic detours should be expected.
According to the town’s online service requests, there are many other sidewalks that need fixing. There’s a request about a dangerous road-to-sidewalk connection on Appleton Street and a sidewalk repair request on Taylor Street, to name a few.
Dan White, who frequently walks the Saugus neighborhoods, said there are some streets where it can be dangerous due to a lack of any sidewalk or the shape of the sidewalk. He specifically mentioned that a lot of sidewalks have tree roots coming up, causing their misshaping, and he agrees that fixing more of them would be beneficial.
“It would help. We get a lot of twisted ankles and stubbed toes…sometimes people trip and fall,” he said.
Board of Selectman Michael Serino is happy with the project happening on Lincoln Avenue.
“I think the residents will be very pleased when they see the improvements that are in store,” Serino said. “This project is a big win for East Saugus and everyone who walks this busy stretch of Lincoln Avenue.”
“It’s great to have selectmen and Town Meeting members advocating for and supporting neighborhood projects such as this one that address safety concerns and help beautify our community,” said Crabtree.
Right now, it is unknown if there are plans to have more sidewalk replacements through Saugus.
