To the editor:
In late July Governor Healey signed into law H.4885, a new law regarding firearms within the Commonwealth. Typically a new bill will go into effect 90 days after being signed, meaning, it would go into effect in late October. The Governor has the power to sign an “emergency preamble” before the 90 days immediately placing the new law into effect. In July, no such action was taken.
The people have the right to start a referendum process by gathering signatures via a petition. If a certain threshold of signatures is met before 90 days the law will be suspended until citizens are given the opportunity to debate and vote about the issue. Massachusetts, the birthplace of liberty, awoke and did start a referendum process and the threshold was met.

In early October before the referendum was due to be handed over with the required amount of signatures, when it became apparent the people had mobilized in defense of their civil rights, the tyrant decided there was an emergency. Where was this emergency in July? In August? In September? The answer is simple, there was none. The real emergency was that the commoners spoke up and were about to cast down her Royal Decree, and that was something King George III..I’m sorry I meant Gov. Healey, could not tolerate.
