Nahant PD driving home safety with traffic grant

October 11, 2024 by Benjamin Pierce

NAHANT — The Police Department announced it has received a state grant of $19,994 for the purpose of improving road safety in town.

Gov. Maura Healey and her administration awarded the funds through the state’s Municipal Road Safety, State Agency Traffic Safety, and Underserved Communities Traffic Safety Grant Programs. Nahant PD’s grant is categorized as part of Municipal Road Safety.

Departments awarded money through that program are able to fund initiatives such as traffic safety enforcement, bicyclist and pedestrian safety enforcement, activities such as training or community events, as well as the purchase of traffic safety equipment or other safety items such as bike helmets.

According to the department, it intends to use the grant for traffic enforcement campaigns that discourage speeding, distracted and impaired driving, and not wearing seatbelts.

In addition, the department will add on-site personnel in certain areas to navigate bicycle traffic, which is expected to be increased due to a new bicycle lane implemented on the Lynnway.

“The Department is very fortunate to have received this grant.” Chief Timothy Furlong said. “The funding will allow us to focus our efforts on bicycle safety as well as pedestrians and vehicle traffic.”
