SWAMPSCOTT — Leda Nery, 41, of Swampscott, was charged with arson in the aftermath of a fire at The Glen Condominium Complex at 1 Loring Ave.
Swampscott firefighters arrived at the location at approximately 2 a.m. on Thursday, Oct. 3 in response to the building’s alarm and sprinkler system going off.
According to Fire Chief Graham Archer, the fire had been largely extinguished by the building’s sprinkler system upon the department’s arrival. The Fire Investigation Unit contacted the State Fire Marshal after gathering evidence that led the unit to believe the fire may have been suspicious in nature.
“It was in a storage room and there’s no power in that storage area,” Archer explained. “They were not able to find any innocent, plausible sources for the ignition.”
He described an early-morning fire in a multi-unit residential facility as a “recipe for disaster.”
Nery was arrested by Swampscott Police on Thursday, Oct. 10, and arraigned in Lynn District Court the next day.
A potential motive for starting the fire has not yet been identified.
