SAUGUS — The TrueVine Church hosted a bake sale and food sale Saturday at 70 Water St. to help raise money for those who suffered damage during Hurricane Helene in Asheville, North Carolina.
The church provided baked goods and beverages, and prayers were offered on request.
Kelly Stewart organized the bake sale together, and other members of the parish helped out and brought food to sell.
“The money is going to go directly to the Asheville Baptist Church. They’re doing a lot of outreach in their town, and they’re doing a lot of food and goods donations,” Stewart said.
She mentioned her friends were close with some members from Asheville Baptist Church, and they asked if it was okay if they raised money and sent it directly to them for hurricane relief.
“They’re going to be helping some families that they know. There’s a single mother whose house got destroyed and a couple of other families who have no home now,” she said.
Stewart gathered members of her parish and neighborhood to help prepare for the event, saying it was a spur-of-the-moment thing to help those in need. The bake sale ran from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., and got busier as the day continued.
“We’ve had a good amount of people come. It’s busier now… It’s kind of a busy street, but we’ve slowly had more people stopping by,” Stewart said.
There are also plans for the group to continue to help with donations in the future.
“We are planning on possibly doing some sort of fundraiser next weekend at the Saugus Youth Football and Cheer game. We aren’t sure exactly what it’s going to be, but we have talked about doing something at one of the football games,” she said.
Donations can be made through Venmo to the username @TrueVineChurch and labeled as Asheville or hurricane. The proceeds will be directly sent to Asheville Baptist Church and given to those in need.
