WEEKEND ROUNDUP: Saugus’ girls soccer team escapes Fenwick late

In Saturday’s Breast Cancer Awareness Game at the Christie Serino Jr. Athletic Sports Complex, Saugus’ girls soccer team took down Bishop Fenwick, 4-2.

That said, it was far from easy. The game was knotted, 2-2, with less than five minutes remaining when Shawn Sewell scored the go-ahead goal with an assist coming from sister Shalyn Sewell.

Minutes later, Madison Botta got fouled around the 15-yard line. From there, Shalyn Sewell took the free kick and found her sister, Shawn, for another goal – this one, a header.

“We raised a lot of money for cancer research that was donated to MGH (Massachusetts General Hospital),” said first-year Saugus coach April Martinez. “Our defense was solid once again.”

GIRLS SOCCER

Lynnfield 4
Danvers 4

Lynnfield raced to a 4-0 lead against the Falcons, but conceded four straight goals in a highly-competitive, highly-intense draw. Danvers’ Georgia Prouty went home with a hat-trick.

“Defensively, we were in good shape and defended Georgia very well,” said Lynnfield coach Mark Vermont. “Ariana (Guarracino), Jordan (Calichman), Sofia (Giardina), Avery (Haney), and Adriana (Regitano) all played really well tonight. Unfortunately, if a player like Georgia gets half-a-chance, she can score. And she did, which was the difference tonight. Morgan (Hubbard) in net for us did a great job.”

Kaylee Barrett of the Pioneers also went home with a hat-trick and “played exceptionally,” according to Vermont, who credited a handful of his players for strong play.

“I thought Ava Damiani was dynamic before she got hurt. … Our midfield with Giada Sykes, Emma Rose, and Clara Caulfield really dominated, especially in the first half,” Vermont said. “Danvers is a great team and well-coached. It was a great game. Bella Carroll (goal) also had a great game up top and both Hannah Doherty and Maggie Ozanian played well on the outside.”

FOOTBALL

St. John’s Prep 36
St. John’s Shrewsbury 14

No matter who you are or what league you’re in, 36 points in one half usually does the trick.

Despite playing in enemy territory, such was the case for St. John’s Prep against St. John’s Shrewsbury on Saturday. Freshman gunslinger Chris Vargas continued his stellar season with three more touchdown passes, while Merrick Barlow caught two of them. Jordan Toribio rushed to the promised land for the Eagles, who upped their record to 5-0.

CROSS COUNTRY

Marblehead’s cross country teams traveled down to the Cape Cod Fairgrounds Saturday night to compete in the Bob Glennon Twilight Invitational.

The boys put on a show and finished second overall. Will Cerrutti and Nate Assa took first and second, respectively, in the medium school varsity race with times of 15:21.04 and 15:26.26.

“Will broke the existing school record (15:21.2 set by AJ Ernst) and Nate is now third in school history,” said coach Will Herlihy. “Jacob Szalewicz also medaled, finishing 20th in a speedy 16:22.7.”

The girls finished 16th, but not without strong performances. Marrietta O’Connell finished second in the medium school varsity race (18:00.64).

Marblehead’s top five runners finished in less than 23 minutes, and top seven in less than 24 minutes. The finishing order consisted of Ruby Assa (21:55.48), Evelina Beletsky (22:06.98), Abbie Goodwin (22:24.76), Evie Becker (22:43.97), Mary Donnellan (23:26.99), and Maren Potter (23:35.24).

“The girls finished 16th as a team, but that understates how impressive these times are across the board,” Herlihy said.
