The Greater Boston League goes through Lynn Classical (15-3) as the Rams captured their second consecutive volleyball league championship.
Classical defeated Somerville on the road 25-15, 25-22, 26-24. The Rams were led by senior Amanda Hughes who registered 14 kills, two digs, and two aces in the conference-clinching game.
Hughes now has 503 kills in her career, becoming the first Lynn Classical player to amass 500 kills.
Emma Chevalier (27 assists, 2 kills, 2 aces, 2 digs), Mia Pento (12 digs, 3 aces), and Jaiyda DeBenedetto (5 kills, 7 digs, 5 aces) all produced big games.
Pento and DeBenedetto received praise from head coach Chris LeBlanc for rallying the team after going down late in the third set.
“When we got into the third set and fell behind, I really thought we were going to need a fourth set to pull it out. But our captain Mia Pento went back to serve at 22-24 and knowing that we just needed a chance, she did her job and put the pressure on Somerville with some quality serves,” LeBlanc said. “Jaiyda also had two huge kills to draw us close and Mia was able to serve an ace for the win. I’m really proud of the effort and the accomplishments.”
The Rams are back in action at home on Tuesday against North Andover. This game is Classical’s “Dig Pink” fundraiser for breast cancer research.
