NAHANT — Community members took to the rotary at Nahant Circle Wednesday evening for a standout in support of Democratic Presidential Candidate Kamala Harris.
The event was organized by the Nahant Democratic Town Committee and also had representation from residents of Swampscott and Marblehead.
Jim Walsh has been a member of the committee for more than 25 years, and said he and his peers’ standout is an example of democracy-in-action. The New Haven, Connecticut native’s interest in politics began when John F. Kennedy ran for President in 1960. When it comes to Nahant, Walsh noted that it tends to vote majority Democratic. However, he said the community unites when it comes to non-partisan issues.
“In terms of community, we work together,” Walsh said.
He expressed his belief that in a general sense, Democrats tend to work together more than Republicans on both a local and national level when it comes to legislation, and that the difference has only been made greater with Republican Presidential Candidate Donald Trump.
“Mr. Trump is there for himself. He is not a Republican, he is not a conservative, he’s a Trump,” Walsh said. “It begins and ends with Donald Trump as far as he’s concerned, and we see things in a different way.”
Gary Prochorchik, another member of the committee, grew up in what he described as a conservative military family in Delaware. He said he has one message to the Nahant residents who did a similar standout in support of Trump earlier this month.
“Wake up,” Prochorchik said.
Catherine Esteverena, of Swampscott, named the overturning of Roe vs. Wade and the Access Hollywood tape of Trump as two reasons why she would never vote for him.
“I have five sons and four brothers and not one of them would say something like that about women,” Esteverena said in reference to the Access Hollywood recording.
Swampscott’s Frances Weiner said that Harris has run a flawless campaign in her opinion thus far, and that the Biden Harris Administration has received blame for things that is not its fault
“She’s energized everybody and has fabulous experience,” Weiner said.
