Saturday was painted KIPP/Lynn Tech all over, with the girls’ cross country team winning the Commonwealth Athletic Conference meet to wrap up the fall 4-0. Wilmarlin Fernandez was named conference MVP for her performances in dual-meets, while coach John Hogan was named Coach of the Year.
“The girls had a great team effort with some big improvements,” Hogan said. “After a few of our top runners fell behind, it was up to some younger runners to move up and improve their times. … The girls ran well and had to work so hard for the win. I was so proud of their effort.”
Leading the way for the girls, who outpaced Innovation, 31-35, were Faith Akinbani (3rd), Maria Villalba (5th), Wildels Nieves (6th), Gisell Rodriquez (7th), Fernandez (10th), Estrella Guerrero (11th), and Addisyn Brown.
On the boys’ side, they finished third with Angel Rivera (5th), Liban Abdikadir (7th), Franklin Rodriquez (14th), Xavier Ortiz (15th), Bryan Depaz (17th), Christian Nunez (21st), and Eli Osgood (29th) leading the charge.
FOOTBALL
Nashoba 20
KIPP 14
In Saturday’s highly-anticipated Division 8 matchup, KIPP fell short in overtime at Manning Field. Mikey Stackpole (11 tackles) and Densel Gomez (9) were defensive standouts, according to KIPP coach Jim Rabbitt.
Enoch Omotosho (53-yard TD) and Jose Echavarria (15-yard TD) rushed to the promised land, but Nashoba’s Chase Carney ended things in overtime with a 10-yard rushing score of his own.
St. Mary’s 42
Cardinal Spellman 14
Ahead of the season, when St. Mary’s coach Sean Driscoll was asked about keys to victory, he pointed straight to the offensive line.
Well, it was in full effect at Manning Field on Saturday. The undefeated Spartans (7-0) rolled over Cardinal Spellman, 42-14, behind a ferocious O-line. Finding the endzone were Demetri Koutsoufalakis (2 TD), Tyler Guy, Rowan Merryman, Yaniel Belliard, and Devell Pamplin.
Catholic Memorial 34
St. John’s Prep 0
Five defensive takeaways will typically do the trick – such was the case for host Catholic Memorial on Saturday. The Knights took down powerhouse St. John’s Prep, 34-0, with Jackson Tucker and Liam Conlon going home with interceptions. Add 244 yards rushing from do-it-all Mekhi Dodd, and that would do it.
GIRLS SOCCER
St. Mary’s 1
Pentucket 0
One was all they needed. The Spartans knocked off host Pentucket, 1-0, Saturday behind a game-winning goal from Sophie Skabeikis. St. Mary’s improved to 10-4-2 as the regular season nears its end.
Framingham 2
Peabody 1
In a non-conference matchup, Peabody fell just short against Framingham. Ally Bettencourt scored a dandy in the second half after a smooth corner-kick delivery from Brooke Lomasney.
“Connie Patturelli was strong in the midfield for us and created some great scoring opportunities before we were finally able to break through,” said Peabody coach Andrew Douglass. “Alessandra Forgione had a great game in net. Madi Barrett, Marley Loring, Gabby Meola, and Cara Corriveau were solid in the back against a great team, which kept us under pressure for a significant portion of the game.”
