ROUNDUP: Swampscott pours in six against Winthrop

The Swampscott girl’s soccer team went into enemy territory and walked away with an emphatic 6-0 win over Northeastern Conference rivals Winthrop. 

The Big Blue had many scorers on the night as Jane Raymond contributed with a brace. Val Park, Fiona Flebbe, Fiona Keaney, Lyla Rogers, and Mattea Kaiser all registered a goal. 

Jenny Sanchez, Park, Greta Siefken, Rogers, Keaney, and Raymond were the playmakers on the afternoon providing assists. 

In goal, Eve Byrne and Easter Cunningham split time with both being credited with a shutout victory. 

GIRLS SOCCER 

Saugus 3

Somerville 0

The Sachems conclude the regular season with a 3-0 win over Somerville. 

In her final regular season game with the red and white jersey on, Madison Botta scored a brace to propel the Sachems. 

Shawn Sewell scored and assisted, while teammate Danica Schena chipped in with the assist. 

The Sachems were up 1-0 after the first half and then turned it up even more in the second half with two goals to show for it. 

Peabody 0

Melrose 0

It was the Tanners final regular season game and it drew to a solid Melrose team. 

Alessandra Forgione secured herself another shutout in net. 

According to head coach Andrew Douglas, “Cara Corriveau played great on defense as did Madi Barrett. Connie Patturelli and Ally Bettencourt linked together a few times to create some chances in the final third.”

Newburyport 2

St. Mary’s 0

The injury bug has hit St. Mary’s and it couldn’t overcome Newburyport on Monday evening. The Spartans played hard and it was highlighted by goalie Eleni Echevarria who was “excellent” in net. 

St. Mary’s is back on the road on Wednesday when it travels to Cardinal Spellman for a 3:30 p.m. clash. 

Marblehead 2

Newton South 2

The Magicians held a 2-0 lead at half but were unable to walk away with a win. 

Marblehead opened the scoring when Sydney Ball’s shot on target was saved but it fell to  Lucy Church who put the goal away for an early 1-0 lead. 

Then it was Ball who scored Marblehead’s second with the assist coming from Ashley Mortensen. 

In the second half, Newton South scored two goals to even the game. 

Hailey Gilmore had 13 saves in net for Marblehead. 

BOYS SOCCER

St. Mary’s 1

Weston 0

It’s been a long time since the Spartans tasted defeat, in fact, it’s been 11 games since their last loss. St. Mary’s (11-2-4) got the job done on Monday evening with a 1-0 win over Weston. 

Mehdi Khemmich scored the game-winning goal. Goalie Cian LeVasseur registered his ninth clean sheet of the season. 

Marblehead 0

Melrose 0

In a defensive battle between two top teams, the Magicians battled to a draw. 

There were a total of six shots in the game with Marblehead creating four of them. Goalkeeper Rory Zampese registered his ninth shutout of the season while his defenders TJ Kelly and Adam Laughlin played well and stifled Melrose’s attackers. 

According to Magicians head coach Elmer Magaña, London McDonald, David Magen, Marc Grazado, and Ilan Druker played well. 

Marblehead finished the regular season with a 10-2-6 record while playing eight Division 1 teams. Now the Magicians will wait for the final power rankings to come out to see who they’ll face in the postseason. 

Swampscott 2

Hamilton-Wenham 0

Swampscott pulled out a late winner against the Generals at Blocksidge Field. 

With 14 minutes left in the game, Jack Raymond found the breakthrough with a left-footed shot to give the Big Blue a 1-0 lead. 

Then 17 minutes later Raymond secured his brace this time with his right foot that curled around the goalie to seal the game.
