SAUGUS — The Fire Department is currently dealing with a brush fire at Breakheart Reservation and Cedar Glen Golf Course.

“We’re experiencing about 20 acres of fire. We have most of the running fire contained, but it’s a deep-seated fire,” Saugus Fire Captain Tom Nolan said.

According to Nolan, the fire started Monday afternoon around 4 p.m. and continued overnight, spreading through both the golf course and reservation.

“We had somebody checking on it every hour or so, and we were back up here first thing in the morning to establish a water supply. We have several handlines in there now working the fire,” Nolan said.

He said that there has yet to be any indication of what started the fire, but that it had been in two separate areas.

The Massachusetts State Forestry Service arrived on the scene to assist with the blaze Tuesday. They cleared a path in the woods to try to prevent the fire from jumping. Saugus firefighters used a backpack blower to attempt to maintain the cleared line.

Saugus and the surrounding areas are experiencing unhealthy air conditions due to the large amount of smoke from multiple fires on the North Shore.

According to Nolan, the Fire Department has contained the fire, and the goal is to keep it contained over the next several days until it rains.

Due to the brush fire, the Fire Department had to cancel its “Saugus Badges For a Cure” event at Fire Headquarters on 27 Hamilton St. The event was moved to Nov. 3 from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. The Fire Department will sell hoodies, and all proceeds will go to Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.
