St. Mary’s football team made its way to Attleborough Friday evening for a meeting with Bishop Feehan. In a battle between conference powerhouses, the Spartans (7-1) suffered their first defeat, while the Shamrocks claimed the Catholic Central League Large crown.
In a 13-0 final, David Quinn recorded 116 yards rushing and a touchdown to guide Feehan. On the other side, St. Mary’s defense was stellar, allowing just six points in the first half. Tyler Guy went home with an interception.
But in the fourth quarter, things changed. St. Mary’s Yaniel Belliard fumbled the ball and it was recovered by Sean Hickey, who returned it 66 yards to the house.
As of Friday morning’s power rankings, St. Mary’s checked in at No. 8 in Division 6. Football brackets will be released this Sunday by the MIAA.
FOOTBALL
Nashoba 44
Lynn Tech 0
Lynn Tech’s first home game of the season didn’t go as planned. The Tigers met their match in Nashoba, which left Manning Field with a 44-0 win. As of Friday morning, Tech (4-3) ranked No. 13 in the Division 8 power rankings, while No. 5 Nashoba should remain a top-five team after the landslide win.
Saugus 30
Chelsea 8
Ryan Shea and Cody Munafo each scored two touchdowns and the Sachems rolled past host Chelsea, 30-8, Friday night. Shea did his damage in the first half, one that ended 16-0 in favor of the Sachems, then Munafo rushed to the endzone twice in the third quarter before a scoreless fourth.
St. John’s Prep 28
BC High 0
BC High’s (6-1) perfect season was no more, as St. John’s Prep (7-1) took care of business at Glatz Field.
After a scoreless first quarter, Prep stuck first when quarterback Deacon Robillard took it himself for a 1-yard rushing score. Next thing you knew, the home team doubled up after Jordan Torbio’s 40-yard rushing touchdown.
In the second half, Prep decided to go the aerial route – twice. Christopher Vargas launched a 43-yard bomb to Pierson Scala for six. Then, Vargas put the cherry on top with his second passing touchdown – this one to Josh Haarmann from 5 yards out.
Marblehead 34
Danvers 7
Crew Monaco’s 27-yard rushing touchdown got the party started and Cam Quigley’s 40-yard interception return ended it. Marblehead took down host Danvers, 34-7, behind an offensive explosion and suffocating defense.
Danvers’ Mike Albano rushed for a touchdown to cut into Marblehead’s first-half lead, but that would be it on the scoreboard for the Falcons.
Lynnfield 59
Hamilton-Wenham 6
Contributions were here, there, and everywhere in this one. Lynnfield took advantage of its home turf at Pioneer Stadium, sending the Generals back with a 53-point loss.
Jared Bernabei rushed five times for 119 yards, including a 93-yard touchdown. He also returned an interception for six. Madux Iovinelli was all over the field, too. He blocked a punt and an extra-point attempt. Dan Lemieux secured a 12-yard touchdown catch, forced a fumble, and deflected a pass that led to Bernabei’s pick-six. Massimo LoGrasso did his thing, converting a 34-yard field goal and cashing in on all eight of his extra-point attempts.
Swampscott 33
Salem 0
This one was never in doubt. The Big Blue played true to their name, storming Salem and returning home victorious in a 33-0 final. Swampscott upped its record to 6-2 and as of Friday morning’s power rankings, checked in at No. 5 in Division 6.
Bishop Fenwick 41
Arlington Catholic 6
Fenwick scored 41 unanswered points to silence Arlington Catholic at Donaldson Stadium in Peabody. The opposition scored its only touchdown with eight minutes remaining in the game, but it was nowhere near enough. Tyler Connolly and Dylan Patturelli each found the end zone, while Aidan Silva went home with two interceptions for the Crusaders.
KIPP 44
Whittier 20
The Panthers of KIPP Academy put a bow on another tremendous regular season. They doubled up Whittier and then some, 44-20, to finish 5-3. Ahead of Sunday’s bracket release, KIPP ranks No. 6 in Division 8.
KIPP scored 30 points in the first half to put the pressure on. Quarterback Elai Machado led the way on Friday, going 8-for-13 for 192 yards and four touchdowns. He also rushed for 106 yards and a touchdown on nine carries. Jose Echavarria did his part with three total touchdowns.
“We rolled offensively today. As long as we stay focused and play to our level and tempo… we’re going to be in good shape,” said KIPP coach Jim Rabbitt. “Consistency is key for us moving forward.”
“Weeks 1-8 really flew by. There were a lot of bumps in the road, but he’s (Machado) learned a lot and that’s an important thing. He’s changed. And when he’s really on, he learns and he can fix his mistakes.”
