ROUNDUP: City meet a hit in Lynn

Mark Aboyoun

November 4, 2024 by Mark Aboyoun

When you gather all the cross-country runners in Lynn and have them compete, you’re bound for an awesome event. The Lynn City Cross Country meet took place on Monday and there was plenty to cheer about. Lynn Tech/KIPP boys took home the championship, while St. Mary’s took home first for the girls.

Lynn Tech/KIPP’s Franklin Rodriquez and St. Mary’s Kelsey Kwiatek both earned MVP honors after the event.

On the girl’s side, Kwiatek did what she’s been doing all season long — outrunning the competition. Kwiatek finished with an impressive time of 17:10 to claim first place.

Lynn Classical’s Mariana DeLeon took second with a 19:38, with Spartans Nina Lopes (20:32) and Siena-Rose Summa (21:08) rounding out the top four.

For the boys, it was a great day to be a Lynn Tech/KIPP fan.

Rodriquez claimed first with a 19:43 time (6:12 split). St. Mary’s fastest boy was Cristian Rodriguez who finished with a race time of 20:34. Four seconds behind Rodriguez was Lynn English’s Ian De La Rosa. Brandon Sok of Classical finished right behind with a 20:41 time.

Lynn Tech/KIPP boys took home first with 29 points, St. Mary’s earned 44 points, while Lynn Classical took home third place with 47 points.

BOYS SOCCER

No. 5 Monument Mountain 2

No. 28 Lynn Tech 1

This game had everything, from penalties to late equalizers and game winners. The Lynn Tech boy’s soccer teams made their school proud despite the loss with a hard-fought game.

The first half ended scoreless and Tech’s goalie Micahel Avila registered eight saves to keep the Tigers in it.

Unfortunately, six minutes into the second half, the Spartans earned a penalty after a handball. The penalty kick was converted with Monument Mountain taking a 1-0 lead.

In the final five minutes of regulation, the Tigers got a goal back to tie the game.

Then in the dying moments, the Spartans found a game-winning goal to halt the potential upset.

GIRLS SOCCER

No. 15 Hanover 4

No. 18 St. Mary’s 3

This was bound to be a tight game and the two evenly matched teams battled for 80 minutes.

St. Mary’s got on the board first early in the game thanks to a goal from Bella Owumi.

Hanover scored twice to give it a 2-1 lead going into halftime. Unfortunately, the second half didn’t start the way St. Mary’s wanted as it trailed 4-1 with 20 minutes left.

The Spartans, as they’ve done all season, continued to battle back and thanks to two goals by Sophie Skabeikis they were able to get it to within one (4-3) with seven minutes left.

However, the comeback fell short and Hanover advanced to the Round of 16.

VOLLEYBALL

No. 13 Dartmouth 3

No. 20 Marblehead 0

Marblehead’s season came to an end on Monday falling to Dartmouth 3-0 with set scores 11-25, 23-25, 22-25.

The Magicians were resilient all year and after the first set, they continued to fight but came up just short in the second and third sets.

Lila Moniz led Marblehead’s offense with eight kills, while Greta Sachs and Sammy Walker each recorded five kills.

Megan Parkman registered 10 digs to lead the Magicians.

No. 14 Greater New Bedford 3

No. 19 Lynnfield 0

It was a tough afternoon for the Pioneers as Greater New Bedford claimed all three sets.

Lynnfield finishes its season with a 12-7 record.

No. 3 Wayland 3

No. 35 Swampscott 0

The Big Blue couldn’t get past Wayland who won the first set 25-16 and didn’t look back.

Unfortunately, Swampscott’s season came to an end but not without a tournament win over North Middlesex Reg. the other day.
