What a season it was for Lynn Classical’s volleyball team, which finished the fall with an 18-4 record, a preliminary-round bye, and a state tournament win against Groton-Dunstable in the round of 32.
But Wednesday night, the No. 15 Lady Rams met their match in No. 2 Medfield, which escaped with a 3-1 victory on home hardwood. Final set scores were tight (22-25, 27-25, 12-25, and 22-25).
“We played great,” said Classical coach Chris LeBlanc. “They just made a few more plays.”
LeBlanc said Amanda Hughes has the best game of her career when the lights were the brightest. Hughes finished the game with 21 kills, a hit percentage of .427, 2 aces, one assist, and one dig.
Emma Chevalier added 34 assists to go along with four aces, nine digs, and one kill, while teammate Mia Pento registered 17 digs.
Not only did Classical make a run at the Division 3 state championship, but delivered some individual records this fall. Amanda Hughes eclipsed 500 kills, Mia Pento became the first member of the school’s 500-dig club, and Emma Chevalier became Classical’s first 1,000-assist club member.
The six seniors helped build the program and leave with an impressive resume:
18-4 record for the third time in four years.
Lynn City Champions for the third time in four years.
Greater Boston League Champions for the third time in four years.
62-24 record for the time these seniors have been in the program.

Well, they’re the defending Division 4 champions for a reason. The No. 2 Pioneers took care of business on their home turf, cruising by No. 31 Uxbridge in a 4-0 final. Next up for Lynnfield is a date with No. 15 Gardner on Saturday (time TBD).
It was Dillon Reilly’s first game of the season after having foot surgery. He didn’t need much time to settle in, scoring two goals – each in the first half – to help Lynnfield advance. One of his goals came from Matt Reinold off a Joel Anthony corner kick, while the other was set up by Reinold and Rocca Scenna (2 assists).
Anthony scored just three minutes into the action, while defender Chris Calnan added his first goal of the year to polish things off in the second half.
“What a great game from our defense. We only gave up one or two shots and it was a good team win,” said Lynnfield coach Brent Munroe. “I thought Mohammed Ayari was really good and Brendan Reilly played great up top.”

When a team scores 15 seconds into the game, it’s typically a good sign for things to come. Sophia Morgese tucked the early goal, setting the tone in the Pioneers’ convincing home win.
Lynnfield scored two more in the opening quarter, courtesy of Taylor Valiton and Izzy Fiorentino. With a comfortable 3-0 at halftime, the hosts didn’t stop, scoring two more in the second half off the sticks of Lauren Mattia and Valiton.
The Pioneers had 15 shots on net. Goalkeeper Lauren MacDonald made three saves and faced two penalty corners. Lynnfield (14-3-3) visits No. 3 Sutton in the round of 8 (TBD).

After a 2-1 win against No. 35 Martha’s Vineyard earlier in the week, No. 30 Fenwick met its match in Wednesday’s game against No. 3 Weston. The Crusaders bowed out of the Division 3 tournament with a record of 8-9-3.
