To the editor:
As a Salem parent and constituent of Rep. Moulton’s, I am outraged that he pinned the Democrats’ support of trans youth, specifically trans athletes, as a reason for Harris’s election loss.
Rather than point out the real weak spots in the Democrats’ election strategy, he decided it was best to blame 10-year-olds who just want to play soccer. We’re talking about kids. Growing up is hard for everyone, but imagine if your ability to simply go to school, use the restroom, and try out for a team was up for debate. It’s disturbing to see my “representative” blame children for an election loss.
Parroting a transphobic, right-wing talking point weaponized during the election does not reflect what our community stands for. Our diverse, welcoming community is one of the many reasons I’m proud to live in Salem, and as the incoming administration puts the rights of trans people in jeopardy, we must use our values to support our trans youth.
How can we trust Seth Moulton to defend our rights when he’s so willing to throw at-risk children under the bus for political gain? Rep. Moulton must acknowledge the harm he caused to the trans and queer community in our district, issue an immediate apology, and show us that he will protect the most marginalized in our community.
