To the editor:
Headlines about child survival in places like Gaza and Ukraine have become increasingly alarming. We now know that nearly 5 million children worldwide are at risk of dying before their fifth birthday. While violent conflict and disease contribute to this grim statistic, malnutrition is the underlying cause of half of these deaths.
Nutrition for Growth (N4G) is a funding partnership that channels essential resources to proven nutrition programs. The opportunity to direct funds to N4G only comes every four years, in conjunction with the Olympics—and it’s happening right now.
Proper nutrition can be the difference between life and death for children facing illness and the effects of extreme poverty. I urge the Biden administration to make a bold pledge to N4G as soon as possible. This alone will save lives and send a strong signal to other world leaders to follow our lead in prioritizing nutrition and child survival.
Sincerely,
Chinyere Azike
