Lynn Woods fire burns 200-plus acres

LYNN — The Fire Department has been providing updates on the Lynn Woods brush fire that started Friday afternoon.

The department reported the fire grew to more than 200 acres as of Saturday evening.

In the department’s most recent post midday Sunday, it was reported the fire continued to grow overnight and surpassed 200 acres. Efforts were made to prevent the fire from reaching structures near Pennybrook Road and Glen Avenue.

Sunday morning, the wind shifted to the northeast and pushed the fire in the direction of Gannon Golf Course, on the east side of Lynn Woods. Companies continued to work in that area throughout the day.

Wind has pushed the fire up into dry trees that are no longer growing, according to the department’s most recent post. The leaves and underbrush act as fuel for the fire. The Fire is burning deep into the group, up to one or two inches deep.

“Rain is the only thing that will completely stop this underground burning,” according to the department’s most recent post.

The department reminds residents to do their part by being “fire-safe.” Outdoor burning is prohibited and limited outdoor cooking is encouraged.

Residents who are looking to support the firefighters can donate items at the Broadway Fire Station at 424 Broadway. The department can accept small bottles of water, small bottles of sports drinks or powders, such as Gatorade, and snacks, such as granola bars and fruit.

The department provides ongoing updates on its Facebook page, City of Lynn Fire Department.
