State tournament close-up – Who’s still alive?

Talk about November madness. The MIAA’s state tournament brackets have been action-packed across five sports (football, boys soccer, girls soccer, field hockey, volleyball). This time of year, however, only so many survive. Here are five teams still chasing their state championship aspirations:

SWAMPSCOTT FOOTBALL

Head coach: Peter Bush
Record: 8-2
Seed: No. 7 in Division 6
Tournament wins: No. 10 Bay Path RVT, No. 2 Stoneham
Next: Semifinals vs. No. 3 Fairhaven (9-1) Saturday at Milford High (4 p.m.)

ST. JOHN’S PREP FOOTBALL

Head coach: Brian St. Pierre
Record: 9-1
Seed: No. 1 in Division 1
Tournament wins: No. 16 Attleborough, No. 8 Methuen
Next: Semifinals vs. No. 4 Needham (10-0) Friday at Burlington High (6 p.m.)

LYNNFIELD BOYS SOCCER

Head coach: Brent Munroe
Record: 15-3-3
Seed: No. 2 in Division 4
Tournament wins: No. 31 Uxbridge, No. 15 Gardner, No. 7 Hampshire Regional
Next: Semifinals vs. No. 14 Frontier Regional (15-2-4) Tuesday at Ayer-Shirley (6 p.m.)

ST. JOHN’S PREP BOYS SOCCER

Seed: No. 4 in Division 1
Tournament wins: No. 29 Acton-Boxborough, No. 13 Framingham, No. 5 Concord-Carlisle
