SAUGUS — Cedar Glen Golf Course and Breakheart Reservation had another fire flare-up Tuesday afternoon, with smoke billowing over Route 1.
The fire started by the fourth and fifth holes and golfers Liza and Ron Pasek witnessed the flames begin.
“We were on the sixth hole … We could see the fire rolling, and all of a sudden, it just exploded. I’d say it was around 12 feet tall, and it was climbing up a tree,” Liza Pasek said.
Both Liza and Ron Pasek commented on there being very little water, making it difficult to fight the constant flames on the North Shore.
“We’re praying for rain on Thursday,” Liza Pasek said.
Capt. Rick Porter was one of the firefighters battling the flames and said that they’ve had issues with the water supply in the area.
“We’re letting it burn to the edge of the fairways because we don’t have a decent water supply here to put out the fire in the middle,” Porter said.
He also said that falling trees combined with the large amount of smoke have been causing difficulties.
“There’s probably been eight trees that have dropped since we’ve been here. We’re trying to keep the guys away from it. It’s so smoky you can’t see the tops of the trees to tell which ones are leaning,” Porter said.
Porter said that they have a line through the woods for getting water to the other side of the fire, but they don’t have enough hose to get over to one side.
This fire is one of many that has occurred at the golf course and reservation, and the area is continuing to be monitored.
