LTTE: Lynnway bike lane concerns

To the editor

November 19, 2024 by To the editor

To the editor:

I understand that the Lynnway is a state highway, but I don’t understand why anyone would think adding a massive bike lane to such a busy roadway is a good idea.

During construction, barrels are blocking visibility, and those of us living at Seaport Landing Condominiums cannot enter or leave our driveways without fearing an accident. They are also constructing flower boxes along the outside of the bike lanes, and I saw pictures showing trees planted in them. If that happens, we will not be able to safely exit our parking lots.

There are days when the barrels block lanes, leaving only one lane open for traffic. With the high volume of vehicles on that roadway, cars cannot easily merge into the open lane, and we worry about the increased risk of crashes as we try to enter or exit our driveways.

This situation might not be as dangerous if the 35 mph speed limit were enforced. Currently, cars are speeding at 50 to 60 mph. It’s hard to understand why anyone would think this bike lane plan is a good idea.

In the past, bikes used the sidewalk, which worked well because there are very few pedestrians. When I walk on the sidewalk, I see there is plenty of room for both walkers and cyclists.

Sincerely,

Geri McManus
Seaport Landing
Lynn
