SAUGUS — With Thanksgiving over and Christmas approaching, many families need help. The fire and police departments are giving to those in need with two separate drives.

On Dec. 5 from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m., both departments are hosting the second annual SFD/SPD kids’ winter coat drive. The event will be held at the Saugus/Everett Elks and include music, food, and raffles.

Tickets to the event can be found on the fire department’s Facebook page through the link on their post about the event. Tickets are free for children ages K-12 who bring a new coat. If you don’t have a coat to give, a ticket is $30, and the department can buy a coat with the ticket money.

The Fire Department is hosting a separate toy drive, which helps out local families.

“Saugus Fire Department Annual Toy Drive is up and running and hopes to do well again this year… We hope to have the same success we have had for the past 30 years. We couldn’t have done it without all the wonderful people from Saugus who have generously donated all these years and helped to put smiles on many children’s faces,” according to the department’s Facebook post.

The last pick-up date for the SFD toy drive is Dec. 15, and they’re looking for unwrapped toys, gift cards, and other items. The drop-off locations for the event are 27 Hamilton St./120 Essex St. (Saugus Fire Department), 298 Central St. (Saugus Town Hall), 466 Central St. (Saugus Senior Center), and 1 Hamilton St./412 Lynn Fells Parkway (North Shore Bank).

The department also shouted out the Saugus Lions Club, which is hosting a toy drive from Nov. 25 to Dec. 7. The drop-off bin for this drive is at Webster First Credit Union on 509 Main St. The fire department will distribute all the toys donated to the Lions Club.
