SAUGUS — The Cultural Council met Monday night in the Brooks Room at the library to discuss the preparations for Cultural Fest.
The Saugus Cultural Council is a group that “seeks to enhance the quality of life for Saugus residents by promoting and funding community cultural events through funding from the Massachusetts Cultural Council,” according to its website.
Though the event isn’t until Feb. 23, the group is working hard to ensure everything is ready when the time comes. They are searching for donations and vendors to participate in the event.
The group has started off with $5,000 from WIN Waste, as well as a donation from the Mass Cultural Council. However, they are still applying for grants and seeking individual donations and sponsors.
The group recently received approval from the Board of Selectmen to hang a banner from Jan. 27 to Feb. 24. They hope the banner will increase interest in the event.
The council is also excited about the performers they have for the event, which include a Filipino dance group and the Veronica Robles all-woman mariachi band. It is also hoping to include a performance from Circus Up, a nonprofit that provides school, after-school, and community circus programs for youth.
The council is currently searching for food vendors and gathering student volunteers.
Co-Chair Dennis Gould hopes the event will help highlight the cultural diversity within Saugus. “My vision for this is [to capture] the cultural diversity [and talent] of Saugus and show it to the kids,” he said.
