NSCC recognized for voter participation

December 4, 2024 by Adam Levine

LYNN — North Shore Community College (NSCC) was recognized by the ALL IN Campus Democracy Challenge (ALL IN) as a 2024 ALL IN Most Engaged Campus for College Student Voting.

The ALL IN Most Engaged Campuses for College Student Voting recognizes colleges and universities for outstanding efforts to increase nonpartisan student voter participation, according to a press release from the nonprofit. The challenge engages more than 10.8 million students from more than 1,075 institutions across the country. NSCC is one of 471 colleges and universities to earn recognition in 2024.

ALL IN is an initiative of Civic Nation, “a nonprofit ecosystem for high-impact organizing and education initiatives working to build a more inclusive and equitable America,” according to the press release.

“I could not be more proud of our students for engaging in democracy with their votes and our faculty and staff for helping students understand how important voting is and also explaining the process of registration and voting,” NSCC President Bill Heineman said.

Earning this recognition is a “team effort,” he said, but he gave special notice to Director of Student Engagement Frederic MacDonald-Dennis for “leading the effort to encourage students to vote.”

“Of course, for the college to receive this recognition, it’s the students who have to go and vote so they ultimately are the most responsible,” Heineman added.

The effort from faculty and staff to educate students about the elections is “admirable” and is not new to the NSCC community, he said.

“Many people have become disillusioned about our governing system and elections but I am happy to report that North Shore students are engaged and care deeply about the issues! They give me a lot of hope for the future,” Heineman said. “I think this honor reflects very highly on Lynn, Danvers, and all the communities the college serves on the North Shore.”
