In 2024, Massachusetts experienced a massive rise in wildfires. October, which typically has 15 wildland fires reported, had about 200 this year. With this spike, there’s also an increased risk for those with respiratory issues.
The Allergy and Asthma network states that wildfires can cause lung irritation and inflammation when you inhale small particles of smoke, leading to coughing, wheezing, and shortness of breath.
One single mother is struggling not just with rent but also with medical bills, as her son has an extreme case of asthma that has sent him to the hospital many times this year. Due to this, she has missed a lot of work, and her son’s father hasn’t helped her during this tough situation.
She hopes that through the kindness of the community, her son will be able to have a joyful Christmas with presents to open.
Now in its 58th year, the Item Santa fund helps to make Christmas brighter for those in need. To donate, clip the coupon in The Item and mail it, along with your check, to The Item Salvation Army Santa, 85 Exchange St., Lynn, MA 01901.
