Swampscott artists to display their work

Zach Laird

December 4, 2024 by Zach Laird

SWAMPSCOTT — The Swampscott Art Association (SAA) will be presenting their members’ artwork at St. Andrew’s Church throughout the holiday season.

Running from Dec. 15 until Jan. 26, the event will feature small works of art from members. The art will be available for purchase during the reception.

“I like to look at this event almost like a springboard, because it blooms this big surge of art by our members for the whole community to enjoy,” Susan M. Burgess, member and receptionist, said.

Burgess mentioned how the association has been around since the late 1940s, working to instill creativity and passion within local residents who struggle with healthy outlets for activity.

The SAA aims to foster and encourage art, both in Swampscott and the surrounding communities, through camaraderie, workshops, and exhibitions for artists and those who appreciate art, according to their mission statement. Their story started when a group of well-known artists came together at the Swampscott Public Library to create exhibits. Currently, there are about 70 active members in the organization.

Their website claims that membership is non-juried and open to all artists and photographers. The SAA offers non-juried shows and hosts artistic workshops and demonstrations.

Burgess noted how, unlike other art associations in neighboring towns, the Swampscott chapter has no physical place they call home. Instead, the association is a collection of wanderers, Burgess said, drifting from one place to another and setting up temporary camp whenever their art is to be exhibited.
