When Joenel Aguero, a Lynn native who attended St. John’s Prep, was honored in Lynn City Hall two years ago for committing to play football at the University of Georgia, he set a goal.
“I will continue to keep this city on the map,”Aguero said that evening.
Call it a mission accomplished. Aguero and the No. 7 Georgia Bulldogs captured the Southeastern Conference championship Saturday night with a 22-19 win against SEC-newcomer Texas, ranked second in the country. The game was played in Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, which held 74,916 people.
Aguero, a sophomore defensive back, made three tackles. His teammate, running back Trevor Etienne, scored on a 4-yard run in overtime to lift the Bulldogs.
So far in his sophomore season, Aguero, who wears jersey No. 8, has made 25 tackles. He made five in one game against Kentucky in mid-September.
Aguero was named All-American and MaxPreps Mass. Player of the Year in 2022 while at St. John’s Prep.
