The Lynn English girls basketball team picked up its first win of the season with a convincing 65-12 win over Salem on Monday night.
Led by Jayleen Novas-Rivera’s 19 points, the Bulldogs went to Salem and earned an important road win.
“It was a much-needed win,” head coach Sydney Brennan said. “I told my starters from the start that it was on them if we get other girls into the game. We started out fast and we ended up getting everyone into the game. At one point we had four freshmen on the court which was fun for them to do that.”
Although Novas-Rivera lit it up on offense, Brennan was impressed by her and teammate Dayana Hio’s defense.
“Jayleen ended with 19 points and Dayana finished with 10 points, but they were really lethal in our press that we’ve been running,” Brennan said.
The Bulldogs have been in action seemingly nonstop since its opening game on Thursday against Lynn Classical. Lynn English had three games in five days as it participated in the Paul Duchane Girls Basketball Jamboree on Saturday where they faced Winthrop.
“We had the game on Thursday, we practiced Friday then had a game on Saturday and were off on Sunday. It’s been a lot of playing basketball which is good for the girls. They’ve done a great job of listening and going hard at practice so we can improve and get better every day,” Brennan said. “This is all good experience for us when we play tougher teams down the road. I think the game against Classical was a test for us and it showed us where we can tweak some things so we can close those games out in the future.”
The Bulldogs are back on the court on Thursday when they host Revere with tip-off scheduled for 6 p.m.
