To the editor:
A recent article in The Daily Item left me with deep concerns about the future of Stocker Playground in Saugus. The article seemed to indicate that a dog park would be the best use for a long-neglected public park—one that is immediately adjacent to the tidal Saugus River, from which boats carrying iron ore from the Quincy quarries passed by on their way to the historic Saugus Iron Works centuries ago.
While a dog park may be useful, I would suggest a public review of this site could promote greater residential use. Perhaps the small beach area can be restored with a dock for fishing. Maybe some updated swings, slides, and picnic tables could be installed, along with improvements to the parking areas and some shade trees. This public park is the only one of its kind in East Saugus and can be developed for all of us. As a former childhood resident of Stocker Street, I hope so.
