Thursday night was a good one for fans of Lynn Classical and Lynn English. Both boys basketball teams took advantage of home court to pick up early-season wins.
Call it a quick night’s work for Classical (3-0), which sent Chelsea home with a 73-43 defeat. Two double-doubles, courtesy of Shyheim Babb (16 points, 12 rebounds) and Rolky Brea Arias (14 points, 13 rebounds) helped do the trick. The Rams built upon a dominant first quarter, which ended 32-11 in their favor.
English (3-1) played host to Revere and won, 82-48. Leading the way were Denzell Guillen (23 points, 11 rebounds, 5 assists, 5 steals), Andrew Karoma (14 points, 6 assists), Alpha Jean (7 points, 15 rebounds), Louis Ledesma (17 points), and Marvin Perkins (11 points).
Talk about good timing. Classical and English square off Friday night with tip-off slated for 7 p.m. inside of the Classical gym. Both of last season’s meetings went to the Bulldogs in 78-58 and 78-52 final scores.
GIRLS BASKETBALL
Revere 62
Lynn English 59
English (1-2) hit the road and even forced overtime in Revere, but fell short by a lone possession. Leading the Bulldogs was Jayleen Novas-Rivera, who netted 30 points and connected six times from downtown. Amara Flores had a big fourth quarter, scoring eight points down the stretch and burying a pair of threes.
Lynn Classical 42
Everett 37
Classical (2-1) coach Tom Sawyer admitted Everett High is “a tough place to play,” but that didn’t stop his Lady Rums Thursday evening.
“They always have a good crowd that’s loud. It was a challenge for the girls,” he said. “Defensively, we turned up the pressure all night long and were able to force some turnovers. We turned them into enough offense to get over the hump.”
Leading the way were Divine Egbuta (18 points) and Nevaeh Eth (7).
Greater Lowell Tech 50
Lynn Tech 35
Despite a handful of strong performances, Tech (1-1) met its match on home hardwood. Engelyz Bingham led the Tigers with 18 points, seven rebounds, two steals, and a block. She was followed by Allison Morales (6 points, 4 rebounds, 2 blocks, 2 assists), Amy Huynh (4 points, 7 rebounds, 2 assists), and Camila Rufino Santos (4 points, 5 rebounds). Head coach Kaitlyn Wechsler added that Jaylianniez Beauchamp “led the way with an amazing defensive performance.”
SWIMMING AND DIVING
It’s been quite the splash from Swampscott’s swimming and diving team, which defeated Salem on Wednesday and Gloucester on Tuesday.
In the 97-74 win against Salem, first-place finishes were aplenty. Charlie McLaughlin, Boris Evdokimov, Julian Flacke, and Alex Darvesh secured first in the 200 medley relay, followed by Joel Flebbe (200 free), Evdokimov (50 free), Claire Slomski (200 individual medley), McLaughlin (100 fly), and Audrey Heath (100 backstroke). The 200 free relay team of McLaughlin, Slomski, Darvesh, and Evdokimov placed first, as did the 4×100 free relay team of Slomski, Heath, Hadley Hustard, and Flebbe to qualify for sectionals.
As for the 89-81 win against Gloucester, the 200 medley relay was won behind Heath, McLaughlin, Slomski, and Evdokimov. McLaughlin (200 free, 100 breaststroke), Slomski (200 individual medley), Hustard (100 backstroke), and the 200 free relay team of Flacke, McLaughlin, Darvesh, and Evdokimov also finished first against the Fishermen.
