Putting some English on it against Classical

LYNN — Last winter, Lynn English’s boys basketball team had its way with traditional archrival Lynn Classical. The Bulldogs left two meetings with 20- and 26-point victories.

The Rams entered Friday’s home game with a 3-0 record, but against the Bulldogs, it was more of the same. English won, 70-49, to up its record to 4-1.

English heated up toward the end of the third quarter and in the fourth to put things away.

“I’m happy with the win,” said English coach Alvin Abreu. “We started slow, but forced turnovers and turned defense into offense. It’s tough playing back-to-backs. Our guys are working at it and getting into shape.”

But Classical held its own before that point. It was a 10-point game at halftime and Classical cut the deficit to four points during the third.

“We had it down to four (points), then we had a breakdown… miscues, mistakes, and turnovers tonight,” said Classical coach Marvin Avery. “I don’t think we played our game to the best of our ability. Credit to them, though.”

Extending his double-double streak to three games, Classical’s Rolky Brea Arias did it again with 16 points and 10 rebounds.

“And he does a nice job defensively,” Avery said.

Leading the Bulldogs were Andrew Karoma (26 points, 6 assists, 6 steals), Marvin Perkins (20 points, 5 steals) off the bench, Denzell Guillen (13 points, 7 rebounds, 5 assists, 5 steals), and Louis Ledesma (10 points, 5 assists).

“That’s the beauty of it,” Abreu said. “Maybe when someone’s off or just not having the best night, you never know who’s going to step up. Team ball is the nature of our program.”
