An 11-point halftime deficit was no problem for Swampscott’s girls basketball team, which upped its record to 2-1 with a 46-43 win in Peabody Friday night.

It came with some theatrics, too. Swampscott freshman Anna Kanders hit a 3-pointer with eight seconds remaining in the game. She continued her stellar start to the season with an 18-point performance.

Sam Ward of the Big Blue had four third-quarter triples and finished with 14 points. Olivia Quagrello led the charge on the defensive end with eight steals.

It wasn’t all bad for Peabody, which saw strong performances from Aliana Ryan (14 points), Ally Bettencourt (10), and Olivia Gaynor (8).

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Lynn Tech 58
Nashoba Valley Tech 26

Lynn Tech (2-1) made its way to enemy territory Friday night, but that didn’t bother the Tigers in a 32-point victory. Engelyz Bingham (25 points, 10 rebounds, 3 steals, 2 assists) and Jaylianniez Beauchamp (13 points, 8 steals, 4 assists, 3 rebounds) led the way, followed by Camila Rufino Santos (8 points, 2 assists, 2 rebounds), Cassidy Calef (4 points, 10 rebounds, 3 steals), and Skylah Sanchez (6 points).

St. Mary’s 67
Archbishop Williams 47

After a loss to defending Division 1 champion Bishop Feehan earlier in the week, St. Mary’s (2-1) bounced back with a 20-point win against host Archbishop Williams. Bella Owumi led the way with 22 points, while eighth grader SySy Mcausland-Emmanuel (18 points) and Lily Norton (11 points, 8 assists) joined the party with strong games.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Lynnfield 77
Hamilton-Wenham 42

Lynnfield sophomore Justin Flores (22 points) was a man on a mission, converting five threes in the Pioneers’ home win against Hamilton-Wenham. Also delivering strong performances were Alex Fleming (19 points, 20 rebounds), and Zach Pincus (8 points, 12 rebounds).

“We hit 12 threes as a team,” said Lynnfield coach John Bakopolus, whose Pioneers are 2-0. “Everyone made contributions in a game these kids controlled from the tip.”

KIPP 70
Whittier Tech 57

With sharpshooter Ryan Damien (17 points) leading the way, KIPP capitalized in its home gym. The first quarter was close, with the Panthers leading by just six points, but by halftime, the lead ballooned to 43-19. KIPP (2-1) returns home Monday in a 12:30 p.m. matinee against Shawsheen Valley Vocational Tech (2-0).

Shawsheen 68
Lynn Tech 51

Lynn Tech “had it rolling” in the first half, according to coach Corey Bingham, but turnovers and missed free throws plagued the Tigers for the second consecutive game.

“We’re not young, but everyone is stepping into new roles,” he said. “We’ve got to get the offensive side going. Defense looks good, but we’re struggling to score.”

The Tigers (0-2) were led by Andy Batista (19 points, 4 assists) and Giovanni Jean (16 points, 5 rebounds).

“It was a great game,” Bingham said. “Great atmosphere here at Tech.”

Swampscott 64
Peabody 38

The Big Blue (3-0) played true to their name yet again, defeating Peabody (0-3) in convincing fashion. Swampscott’s Connor Chiarello (23 points, 5 steals) and Teddy O’Neill (9 points, 3 assists) led the way, while CJ Hyer “provided a spark off the bench with eight points,” according to coach Jason Knowles.

Thad Broughton Jr. (13 points) and Mark Mendonca (12 points) led the Tanners, while Noah Crocker, Joe Smith, and Dom Domenici “all played well,” according to coach Thad Broughton Sr.

St. Mary’s 83
Hallandale 71

The Spartans (2-1) defeated Hallandale High (Fla.) Friday night with June Vasquez leading all scorers with 17 points.
